South Beach Diet - Initially developed to help patients avoid or combat heart problems, it turned out to aid in weight loss as well. Similar to the Atkins Diet (low carb), the South Beach Diet does not eliminate carbohydrates, but rather eliminates the bad ones, which raise blood-sugar levels. Here is an overview of the diet, along with guidelines, vegetarian guidelines, and allowed/not allowed foods for each of the 3 phases. The South Beach Diet bases it's allowed carbohydrates on the Glycemic Index (GI), which ranks carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. Stevia Herb As Low-Cal Sweetener - Stevia is an herb native to South America. It's leaf is approximately 150-300 times sweeter than refined sugar and has no calories. And despite hundreds of years of safe use as a sweetener in many countries, it is banned by the FDA for use in diet foods in the US (The FDA does allow it as an herbal suppliment). At the same time, Aspartame (NutraSweet), which is banned in Japan (Coca Cola uses Stevia there) and many other countries, is used extensively in the US. Collusion? Conspiracy?
